If you’re new to homeschooling or unschooling, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. We have an embarrassment of riches in curricula, homeschooling styles and opinions. Where do you go? What do you do?
One word: relax!
Spend some time exploring this website and others. Get a cup of coffee (or tea, if – like me – that’s your thing) and take a deep breath. Save what you like by pinning it. Share your knowledge, comment, learn.
Millions of homeschoolers are already doing what you are setting out to do. Take heart.
Homeschooling for me started as a necessity. But I grew to love it with a passion I could not explain. I was first introduced to it when my husband and I had a financial reversal. We had to move from what could have been our dream home into a neighborhood with what we knew to be bad schools. Necessity, as they say, is the mother of… homeschooling, in this case.
I fell into research with gusto. I began to attend groups, I signed up for message boards and catalogs. I read everything about it I could get my hands on. My children were still little so I had time to think and experiment.
I talked to other homeschooling and unschooling moms. But something about the different methods didn’t sit right with me. It was always either this or that. Both seemed too extreme. Like Aristotle, I sought the mean – the middle ground between deficiency and excess.
I realized there was no way to do this but to blaze my own path. And slowly, over time, classical unschooling developed. It is an odd bird, I’ll grant, but it works. In the crazy bustle of our lives, it works extremely well.
So I decided to write about it. The result is this blog. The result is also the book The Classical Unschooler.
The book explains our method and philosophy. It lays out in detail how we learn in our family. For the sake of simplicity, I have broken down everything we learn by subject, although in our day to day lives, subjects are rarely discussed or studied as disparately.
I am currently in the process of writing a companion to The Classical Unschooler.
In this new book, I will be laying out a step by step approach to building such a curriculum on your own – one that works for your family and one that is completely customizable based on your needs and wants.
